Crutzen workshop The cost of doing (nothing): open, curious and action-oriented

Sometimes you don’t need a traditional conference programme, but rather time, space and the right people around the table. On 28 and 29 January, we will focus on one central question: what does it actually cost us if we do nothing – and what are the benefits if we do take action to accelerate the economic transition to a climate-proof and neutral future? This resulted in an intensive two-day design session in which we jointly identified themes and outlined action plans for accelerating economic transitions.

Around 80 researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, financiers and practitioners gathered to discuss one central question: what will it actually cost us if we do nothing – and what will we gain if we do take action to accelerate the economic transition to a climate-proof and neutral future? Not as an abstract discussion, but based on everyday practice. The outcome of these days forms the basis for the new KIN Knowledge-in-Action call, in which research and practice explicitly work together.

Barriers in focus

Instead of presentations and panels, the focus was on co-creation. During creative sessions, participants shared the obstacles they encounter in their work: regulations that hinder sustainable choices, financing that does not move with the times, and benefits that are difficult to visualise. At the same time, there were also many examples of places where practice shows that other forms of ownership, collaboration or organisation can form the basis for an economy that focuses on well-being, ecology and justice.

The new economy for all your senses

Parallel to the programme, KIN artist-in-residence Sissel Marie Tonn and Lisa Berkouwer challenged you to experience new ways of seeing, tasting, listening, feeling and smelling through the “sensory experience” they designed. Because what happens when we not only conceive of the new economy but also embody it?

Towards a Knowledge-in-Action grant

At the end of 24 intensive hours, several concrete themes and issues were on the table that we want to pursue together. But perhaps even more important than the results on paper was the atmosphere: open, curious and action-oriented. The feeling that no one has to do this alone!

How do we proceed now?

In the coming weeks, KIN will start drawing up an agenda and a Knowledge in Action grant based on the input provided by the experts participating in the workshop. We will, of course, communicate about this in detail via our channels.

If you are interested in submitting an application for one of the themes, please make a note of these dates in your diary:

  • 24 February: Opening of the Knowledge in Action grant. The closing date will be 14 April (dates still to be confirmed).
  • 9 March (11:00-12:00) and 2 April (13:00-14:00): two online information sessions about the Knowledge in Action grant. You are welcome to join us with your questions.

More information will follow shortly via this page on the NWO website or keep an eye on the KIN channels.
