This new Knowledge in Action grant from KIN encourages collaboration between science and practice to accelerate economic transition. With this call, we challenge social partners and researchers to develop concrete interventions through co-creation and learning, with a view to creating an economy that focuses on well-being, ecology and justice. Researchers and social partners can submit a joint application for a maximum of €50,000 per project until 14 April (14:00 CET).
What does a monetary system look like that is not purely focused on growth, but also contributes to well-being or a liveable planet? Why, for example, do we count damage caused by flooding and restoration, such as healthcare, as costs for liveability, but do not weigh the value of clean air, nature and informal care? How do we re-root the economy in ecology and how do we democratise property and ownership for a fairer distribution? These are just a few of the questions we would like to see further investigated when it comes to accelerating economic transitions for a climate-proof future.
The theme and accompanying “Knowledge in Action agenda” for this grant have been drawn up by a diverse group of experts from academia and practice. The Knowledge in Action agenda contains targeted solutions, research questions and transition learning objectives that can accelerate desired transitions within the theme of economic transition.
We are looking for proposals that combine creativity, courage and imagination with concrete social or ecological impact. As long as they combine practice and research to develop knowledge that contributes to sustainable, equitable solutions for economic transition. Projects can experiment with new forms of collaboration, art and culture as catalysts for change, innovative financial or legal instruments, or experimental interventions in neighbourhoods, communities and ecosystems.
What is on the Knowledge in Action agenda?
This call for proposals is thematic. This means that a proposal must fit within the Knowledge in Action agenda: “Economic Transition: the costs and benefits of doing (nothing)”.
The sub-themes of the Knowledge in Action agenda are:
- A financial system without (monetary) growth
- Regulation, enforcement and institutional renewal for economic transition
- Dealing with loss, doing nothing and contraction
- New entrepreneurship and ownership beyond shareholding
- Externalised costs and benefits, cascade effects and societal risk management
- (Ownership of) land, ecosystems and resources in the (public) space
- Counteracting forces
Detailed information and a description of each sub-theme can be found in the information document about this grant (call for proposals). This can be downloaded from this page on the NWO website.
Who can apply?
An important ingredient of the Knowledge in Action grant is that we want to use it to stimulate collaboration between science and practice. The call therefore challenges social parties and researchers to develop concrete interventions through co-creation and learning. That is why various approaches are welcome, from (trans)disciplinary, visual, design-based and entrepreneurial to process-oriented, reflective or activist.
Applications can be submitted by:
- Practical organisations experimenting within the desired transition
- Researchers who want to use knowledge for transformative, societal impact
- Pioneers who are already working on (sustainable) alternatives
- Anyone who wants to connect science and practice for climate transition
Applications must be submitted by at least one knowledge institution and one social organisation, with both parties submitting a joint proposal.
How can you apply?
The KIN is part of NWO and uses the NWO application system. Would you like to submit a proposal? Then read carefully how to do so in three steps:
- Download the application form from the online application system ISAAC or from the NWO website (on the website of the relevant funding instrument)

About the Knowledge in Action grant
The Knowledge-in-Action grant mobilises science and practice for just climate transitions through doing-by-learning and learning-by-doing. Knowledge institutions and societal organisations can jointly apply for up to €50,000 for transformative, experimental intervention-projects to collaboratively explore what the value of transition can look like: what possible solutions, investigative questions and transition learning goals can accelerate the desired transition?
