The second round of Make-atons is on!

On 22 January, the KIN organised another Make-aton for the revision of the National Climate Adaptation Strategy (NAS ‘26) in cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) as coordinating ministry. By doing so, we want to make joint steps in the development of adaptation pathways, the visualisation of different (policy) measures over time, as input for the NAS.

In 2024, the first round of Make-aton took place. Now we are building on the key insights and results with a new round of two meetings in total. The themes of this round are: improving water quality, climate-robust agriculture, resilient nature, seveso facilities prepared for climate risks, climate-adaptive new construction, climate-proof living for all and healthy working landscapes.

During this first Make-aton, we were guests of the KNAW and experts, policymakers and scientists worked in different groups with a ‘maker mentality’ on possible measures for these 7 tasks to make the Netherlands climate-proof – now and in the future. The day was opened by discussion leader Marsha Simon with a drawing assignment in which participants visualised the future to activate the creative brain. The different groups then set to work in two intensive sprints to identify key risks and possible adaptation options. The findings were summarised in a first version of an adaptation path map and presented to the rest of the participants in a plenary session. The outcome, he said, was ‘comprehensive’.

‘It is fascinating how much we have already been able to visualise. I am curious to see how we can find the connection between all these paths,’ said one of the participants. This is exactly what the second Make-aton, which takes place on 20 March, will be about.

In the meantime, a small team will continue to elaborate and validate the input gathered. The results will be presented on 20 March.
