Recht voor Klimaat envisions a future in which the law naturally contributes to a livable world and helps to safeguard planetary boundaries. In that future, lawyers in all sectors take responsibility for respecting planetary boundaries in their work. They continuously innovate their field of law with that goal in mind.

The central goal of Law for Climate is to promote legal expertise, awareness and activity for the benefit of the climate and life within planetary boundaries. To this end, the foundation offers a platform where lawyers can meet, learn together and develop concrete legal initiatives.

Recht voor Klimaat wants it to become self-evident that climate and nature interests play a role in all legal actions. That lawyers in all sectors have the knowledge, tools and professional network to practise their profession in line with planetary boundaries. That climate law is an integral perspective within legal practice. And that Recht voor Klimaat offers or supports a solid, broadly supported legal infrastructure to support the development of legal practice in the above sense.

Recht voor Klimaat’s mission is to inspire, connect and equip lawyers, together with the KIN, among others, to contribute to a sustainable society through their own legal practice, by:

  • Education: organising knowledge-oriented programmes and meetings on legal innovation in light of the climate and nature crisis;
  • Networking: working together with lawyers, policymakers, scientists, politicians and other relevant professionals on effective new regulations and better application of existing standards that support the transition to a sustainable society;
  • Activation: stimulating practice-oriented research and developing legal instruments that help to promote sustainability;
  • Awareness: providing space for awareness, reflection and critical dialogue – about the role of law and lawyers in nature and climate issues.
