‘Re-rooting: Indigenous perspectives on just transitions’ is now available online. A co-created documentary and dialogue initiative on Indigenous principles for just climate futures.
After a year of inspiring conversations and screenings across diverse communities, the ‘Indigenous Liberation Month × Just Transitions Network‘ is delighted to announce that Re-rooting is now freely available online. More than a documentary, Re-rooting is a co-created documentary and dialogue initiative developed through a long, meaningful collaboration among Myra Colis, Anna Melnyk, Laure Herpain and the ‘Indigenous Liberation Month × Just Transitions Network’, funded by the Klimaatonderzoek Initiatief Nederland (KIN).
Together, we began with a simple yet profound question:
What if the energy transition were led by Indigenous principles?
Through conversations, storytelling and collective reflection, the initiative explores how Indigenous principles of reciprocity, responsibility, intergenerationality, relationality and interconnectedness can inspire more just and sustainable futures. Rather than offering definitive answers, Re-rooting invites viewers into an ongoing dialogue about climate justice, technology and the future of environmental decision-making.
The documentary features the voices and experiences of Sarah Pardede (Indigenous Toba Batak), Semuel Sahureka (Indigenous AlifURU), Myra Colis (Indigenous Igorot), Carolina Sanchez De Jaegher (Indigenous descendant scholar), Skylar Joseph (Indigenous Sicangu Lakota), Diana Vlet (Indigenous Lokono & Warao), Cesar Taguba (Indigenous Igorot), Audrey Christiaan (Indigenous Kariña), Yvonne Belen (Indigenous Igorot), Etta James (Indigenous Arawak), Fatima Delgado Medina (Lecturer & Researcher) and Anna Melnyk (Climate Ethicist). Creating a collective reflection on justice, belonging and more plural ways of imagining energy futures.
A co-created journey through dialogue
Before becoming publicly available, Re-rooting travelled through a variety of academic, artistic and public spaces. Here each screening became an opportunity for collective reflection and conversation. The initiative has been presented at the Je Geeft me Vlinders Festival (Utrecht), the Social Science and Humanities in Energy Conference 2026 at ETH Zürich, the Breaking Cage Art–Science Residency in France, the Sonneborgh Museum and events hosted by TU Delft Delft Design for Values Institute. The conversations that followed each screening became an integral part of the initiative itself. Re-rooting is not simply a film to watch; it is an invitation to listen, reflect and learn together.
The initiative is designed not only to be viewed but also to spark meaningful conversations. Invitations from universities, museums, organisations, conferences and community groups interested in hosting screenings, accompanied by facilitated workshops and dialogue sessions, are warmly welcomed.
