New course: Justice during the climate crisis (DRIFT initiative)

Important update: the start date of the course ‘Justice in a Changing Climate’ has been postponed until this autumn. Registration is open!

Climate change affects everyone, but not everyone in the same way. Whilst some groups are already benefiting from green innovations, others risk falling further behind. Think of vulnerable neighbourhoods that flood, farmers who lose their harvests due to drought, or communities that have to leave their homes. How can we ensure that the transition to a sustainable society is fair?

The course is designed for transition professionals who wish to explore the topic of climate justice in greater depth. The three-day course helps them recognise specific dilemmas – such as inequality, power imbalances and conflicts of interest – and offers practical tools to put justice at the heart of their work. Whether you work on climate adaptation, energy transition, water management or area development: here you will learn how to embed justice in policy, projects and collaboration.

Where and when?

Programme

Participants will engage with theory, practical examples and moral dilemmas surrounding equity in transitions, with explicit attention to differences between local and international contexts, and between current and future generations. There will be scope to work on your own case study.

The course is led by Joyce Browne (UMC Utrecht), Sophie Buchel (DRIFT) and Andre Rodenburg (Samen Klimaatbestendig). This collaboration brings together expertise at the intersection of just transitions, planetary health and social inequality in relation to climate change.
