With its Global Transitions (GT) programme, KIN focuses on accelerating local transitions in regions that have contributed least to climate change but are most vulnerable to its effects.

In this programme, we identify knowledge gaps, dependencies and barriers to knowledge transfer that can either accelerate or hinder transitions. Together with local (knowledge) parties from the focus region, the KIN sets the agenda for this. KIN supports the process of analysis, the formulation of knowledge questions and the development and deployment of (new) knowledge. We do this by promoting equal cooperation, ensuring that climate justice is incorporated into all projects where possible, and stimulating co-creation with local parties in the lead. In addition, KIN aims to promote cooperation between various actors in the system, such as between practice, policy and knowledge, with a special focus on marginalised groups.

How we work

Climate transitions require changes in our way of life that are necessary to combat climate change and make society resilient to the effects of a changing climate.

Climate transitions are complex and require a systemic perspective. The route to the desired systemic climate transitions is not fixed. The Knowledge-in-Action Approach was developed by KIN to develop new insights, knowledge and actions in order to arrive at this route through transdisciplinary collaboration and to explore alternatives to unjust and unsustainable systems together with practitioners.

A local perspective in an international context

KIN always seeks out local climate issues. Based on these issues, we look for systemic barriers and opportunities. We define the desired transition and investigate possible solutions.

Within Global Transitions, we try to align with national plans and local needs in the region where we start programmes. We encourage local ownership and seek partners who can take the lead themselves and are not afraid to collaborate with people from other disciplines or backgrounds. We listen carefully to our local partners and, where possible, seek out advisors from the region so that we can determine our course together as much as possible. We also work with an international and diverse programme committee that advises us, contributes ideas and keeps us on our toes.

Where we work

We are currently setting up a Global Transitions programme in Mozambique. KIN is also active in the Caribbean.
