Alliance for a Just Energy Transition

The Alliance for a Just Energy Transition (ARE) connects residents (initiatives), policymakers, businesses, scientists and civil society organisations to arrive at a shared understanding of and joint solutions for a (more) just energy transition, based on the everyday reality of residents.

ARE is the further development of a multi-year process of action research. Since 2022, various perspectives on the energy transition have been brought together in an equal dialogue, which led, among other things, to the publication of the report Invisible Bridges: Opportunities for a (More) Just Energy Transition in 2023. Whereas the energy transition is often approached from either a technical or a social perspective, ARE focuses on an approach in which technological innovation and social justice are inextricably linked. In practice, this means that the source knowledge of residents (initiatives) and energy coaches, among others, is brought together with knowledge from science and policy to reinforce each other and together ensure an energy transition that is (more) just.

ARE’s focus in 2025 and 2026 will be on two lines of action:

  • Dialogue approach for social innovation: organised on the basis of commonality – both technical and social – and aimed at integrality in the current assessment frameworks for (greater) fairness in the energy transition
  • Integrated cooperation: from the Fair Energy Transition Academy, Game Changers in the energy transition are positioned from different roles and contexts to work together on an equal footing towards a fair energy transition.

Through open dialogue, co-creation and knowledge sharing (from literature and practice), both lines of action identify obstacles and develop integrated solutions for greater resident control in the energy transition.
